What the hell happened to Q1?
It's nearing the end of March and I have no idea how we got here so fast. Work never slowed down and only seemed to accelerate. With this constant go go action, I was exhausted by the end of the day and weekends were for recovery, though not entirely sufficient due to needing to take care of general life things and prepare for another week of being a cog in the capitalism wheel. March also threw me a curve and plans did change. I think I'm finally able to regroup, so I thought a reflection on where I am with my goals would be a good idea.
Personal
- Misogi - Start, develop, and promote a blog. Post twice a month (Update: Been doing that, though March will only have one post. I did start writing a post earlier in the month, but I'll save that for later.)
- Adventures
- Take a photography class (Update: I did sign up for a half-day class. A few days before the session, I decided to cancel due to exhaustion. I have a nice, though old, digital camera that has optional advanced settings and I wanted to learn more about those. I have used the camera a couple times in the past few months but have found the images to be of lesser quality than my iPhone. I've decided to modify this goal to learn more about advanced settings with the iPhone camera.)
- Go on a birding field trip (Update: If you count attempting to see the Sandhill crane migration (pro tip, mid-March is supposed to be more optimal than end of the season), accomplished. While this trip was planned when I made this goal, that was not the intent of the goal. It was to attend an event put on by the Audubon Society or similar group. So, goal not accomplished.)
- Investigate volunteer opportunities and pick one. Also evaluate my recurring giving and keep it local. (Update: I have been contemplating where to volunteer. Still pondering.)
- Take an art class (Update: Nothing yet, but on my radar.)
- Get a fragrance consultation at Sephora (Update: Nothing yet, but still in the cards.)
- Resurrect my OG holiday party (Update: I have been buying supplies as they cross my path.)
- Winning habits
- Track my expenses in Simplifi, editing and reviewing weekly (Update: Not doing this weekly, but still doing.)
- Add strength training to my workouts (Update: Not added yet. My after work walks stopped, re: exhaustion. Renewed my gym membership, plan on getting back on the treadmill tomorrow. Will then add the strength training.)
- Start scanning and organizing my photos (print and digital) (Update: Not yet, but I did scan a few on my no longer new scanner to do that 90s meme on Instagram. I was pretty cool.)
- Establish a regular creative practice (Update: Nothing yet, need to ponder a bit more.)
Professional
- Misogi - Position myself to offer my candidacy for an elected role in a national professional organization (Update: I did volunteer to serve as a committee chair after some advice learned in 2c. I also volunteered to serve as a peer mentor for a program I completed last year. Waiting to see if I'll be selected.)
- Adventures
- Re-establish a LinkedIn profile. Enhance ORCID profile as well. And finally update my CV in the correct format and add the things I've done that I didn't think belonged on a CV (Update: Started the LinkedIn profile, but haven't done a lot with it. I feel like I have to behave myself on this platform. I use Bluesky for my professional voice. I feel more comfortable there and able to make the occasional hot take. LinkedIn doesn't seem hot takey. I did import my publications and conference presentations into Zotero, though I do need to cleanup some of the metadata.)
- Prepare and submit proposal for a contributed paper to ACRL 2027 (Update: The call is out there, but the project I was going to submit about won't be where I feel it should be for a contributed paper. I think I'll submit a lightning talk, perhaps in the virtual format, if available. I don't think I'll be able to afford to travel as my professional development funding will likely go to another conference.)
- Connect with others who have been elected to leadership positions within a national professional organization to learn about candidacy (Update: Accomplished. I had a great conversation with this person. Confirmed some suspicions of mine and I was able to determine that I should wait another year or two to decide. But she gave me some advice about being able to have a voice without being in an elected role. That prompted me to volunteer to serve as a committee chair.)
- Lead the reinvention of a state professional organization (Update: In the midst of this right now. A few changes have been made, but more investigations and brainstorming sessions needed.)
- Create a multi-year research plan (Update: Nothing formal yet, but I do have ideas that will possibly occupy me the next couple of years.)
- Develop a strategy to prepare to meet criteria for promotion to full professor (Update: Nothing formal, again. Updating my CV for my supervisor to review for gaps is in progress.)
- Winning habits
- Regularly review all of my information feeds and organize accordingly. I highly recommend Raindrop.io for those of you that miss del.icio.us (Update: I'm way behind in keeping up with these information channels. I need to put it on my calendar, one hour a week to clear the decks. I've also decided that I don't need to read all the things that cross my feed. By organizing them in Raindrop, I can call that information up when I need it. I am not a paid spokesperson.)
- Carve out at least one hour a week for reflection or learning (Update: Not yet. I should put that on my calendar, too. Could be a Friday thing.)
- Work on skills and content to enhance mentoring and staff 1:1 meetings (Update: I forgot about this one. Sounds like a summer plan.)
- Establish “coffee” breaks with colleagues for regular connection (Update: Nope. Another summer plan.)
Not too bad! I wasn't supposed to start everything all at once.
